PETER BLAKE
ARTHK12
17th May - 20th May 2012

As a participant in this year’s ARTHK fair at the Convention Centre, The Cat Street Gallery is thrilled to announce its solo show of the legendary works of Sir Peter Blake at our stand on Level 1, Booth 1E11.

With new works made especially for Hong Kong, and some rare and original pieces, this exhibition of works promises to be a very special expo and tribute to the ‘Godfather of British Pop Art’.

In 2007 Tate Liverpool held a major retrospective of the artist’s work, further sealing his status as a British national treasure. Blake is most commonly known for creating the artwork for one of the most celebrated moments in twentieth music history, the Beatle’s album ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’. Throughout his career Blake has appropriated motifs and influences from a myriad of popular culture genres, including sport, fashion, music and film. His genius lies in his ability to translate current cultural trends and attitudes in an understated manner, deftly presenting social concerns to the contemporary audience experiencing them. Testament to the success of his work is the manner in which the appeal of his artwork continues to grow as time passes, in some respects they act as time capsules for future generations looking back to these past eras. Although he is at core a Pop Artist, Blake also shares an affinity with figurative and realist artists and his work often references illustrative art, folk art, vintage design and Victorian imagery.

Celebrating his 80th birthday this year, Sir Peter Blake has an illustrious career that spans six decades. Knighted in 2002, an honorary doctor of the Royal College of Art, Blake’s art is represented in major collections throughout the world. His work crosses all generational divides, featuring found materials and capturing the effervescent ethos of the sixties, which continues to inspire great respect from younger artists such as Damien Hirst, Gavin Turk, Pure Evil and Tracey Emin.
