JOSHUA YELDHAM
Two Rivers - Hawkesbury - Yulong
30 September - 21 October 2011

The Cat Street Gallery, is proud to present the first solo show in Asia for the much sought-after Australian artist Joshua Yeldham, who is inspired by a deep spiritual affinity for the natural landscapes of his homeland.

Yeldham’s canvasses are extraordinary tapestries, brimming with detail and imagination. The artist is obsessive in his attention to detail and has an unbridled creativity. His work is literally saturated with motifs, metaphors and exquisite details.

In ‘Two Rivers’ Yeldham revisits his great muse, Hawkesbury River, and he pairs paintings made in Australia with new work inspired by the Guangs xi region and its distinctive Yulong River. In a series of extensive field visits, the artist physically and psychologically inhabits these terrains, observing and contemplating the great mythical qualities of these grand ecological systems that we depend upon. He creates both abstract landscapes and figurative works, which employ recurring symbolism, fusing real topography with narrative and myth.
Yeldham received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Rhode Island School of Design in the United States. He has exhibited widely in Australia to great critical acclaim and been a finalist for the Wynne, Mosman and Sulman art prizes. Aside from international private collections, his work is held in several public and corporate collections including the Australian Stock Exchange and The University of Wollongong. Most recently, Yeldham has been selected by Manly Art Gallery & Museum and Hawkesbury Regional Gallery to present his first survey exhibition, comprising fifteen years of painting.
