TUNG LO

Tung Lo's emotive canvasses are testament to his enduring quest to capture that which is beautiful. Working across geographical and cultural boundaries, Tung Lo's work is inspired by a multitude of world wide art: from tomb brick painting of Tsin Dynasty China, to stone paintings in Northern Africa, to contemporary Japanese artists.

Born into a traditional Chinese family, Tung Lo moved to Hong Kong and later emigrated to the United States. Since 1993 he has been based in Paris, though still travels widely, leaving his footprints in over 60 countries. It is these literal and artistic journeys that underpin his work, as he seeks out fresh inspiration and fuels his creative passion.

Tung Lo's recent works could be described as delicate patchwork portraits where the face is seemingly deconstructed and reconstructed in an ephemeral manner on the canvas. The result is poetic, full of movement and grace. Tung Lo never allows the colour palette to be jarring or the features to be displaced, instead he creates his own meditation upon the subject. His work has been described as psychologically arresting as the viewer ponders the seemingly innocent female gazes. The use of line, colour and form is consistently subtle and pure in Tung Lo's work, contributing to his 'love stories' on canvas. For an artist who admits being fascinated by the idea of life as a love story, he avoids sentimentality to produce that which is genuine and meaningful.

Tung Lo's work has been displayed in museums and galleries throughout the world. He has studied at the Pacific Art Guild, U.S. and at the Paris American Academy among other institutions. He is the winner of several prizes including The First Biennal Art Fair, Guangzhou, China and the Philip Chariol Annual Prize, France.

"On my journey through contemporary art, I witness the estrangement of form and intention. I see data reshaping the space, information redirecting our perceptions, fashion transforming the utopia. and I see you being transfigured by consumption.
Life is my love story. Everyday a baby comes into being, to draw the new, the brilliance, the nobility, the honesty, the very reason for being who I am, and where I'm going."Tung lo
